Overview

Tata Safari is a full-size three-row SUV that commands a lot of respect on Indian roads. It is priced between 16.19 lakh and 27.34 lakh (ex-showroom). Think of it as a stretched version of the Harrier, sharing the same Land Rover-derived OMEGA platform. Tata recently gave it a facelift, adding a massive piano black grille, new LED headlights, and a refreshed interior with twin 10.25-inch screens.

Just like the Harrier, the Safari only comes with a 2.0-litre Kryotec turbo diesel engine pushing out 170 PS of power. You can choose a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Tata also introduced a 4x4 version for buyers who want to take it off the road. Following the brand's focus on safety, the Safari easily scored a 5-star rating in Global NCAP crash tests. It comes with 7 airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control as standard.

👍 Like
  • Imposing road presence: The sheer size and length of the Safari make it look like a proper premium SUV. It easily turns heads on the highway.
  • Third-row space: Unlike cramped 7-seater cars, the Safari actually has decent room in the third row. The roof is high, and there is dedicated AC for the back passengers.
  • Highway cruiser: The heavy build and soft suspension soak up road imperfections effortlessly. It feels extremely stable and relaxed at speeds above 100 km/h.
  • ADAS technology: The updated Safari gets advanced driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control and lane change assist, making long drives much safer.
👎 Don't Like
  • No petrol engine: If your daily running is in the city and you want a petrol SUV, Tata does not offer that option here.
  • Parking headaches: At nearly 4.7 meters long, the Safari is extremely difficult to park in tight basement parking lots or narrow market lanes.
  • Heavy steering: The steering wheel feels very heavy at low speeds. Driving in stop-and-go city traffic or taking tight U-turns requires a lot of physical effort.
  • Low fuel efficiency: Expect heavy running costs. In the city, the mileage drops to single digits, and even on the highway, it barely crosses 14-15 kmpl.
